UK Vets offering DHP vaccinations without Lepto

This map will hopefully show practices that understand vaccination regimes, and will offer DHP vaccination without Lepto - without any quibble by Reception staff or Vets who are supposed to be trained in their profession.

It must be remembered that we will never know how many Lepto vaccinated dogs were helped to fight off a Lepto infection by the vaccine. And we must remember that dogs do catch and even die from Lepto infection in the UK. Part of the issue there is the dire need for a quick, cheap, in house test for Lepto to find out if the dog actually has Lepto, and not just unwell. I think all dog owners are now sick of the extreme charges that we are seeing for basic tests.

Of the dogs that do die from Lepto, it is often down to a delay in getting antibiotics into the dog when first attending the practice.

It should not be necessary to remind veterinary practices that vaccinations must only be given with the owner's consent, once they have been given full information so that they can make an informed decision. It is wrong to mislead owners by claiming that the dog must have Lepto to save it's life.

Notice to all UK Vet practices

The vaccination for Distemper (D), Hepatitis (H) [also known as Ardenovirus (A)], and Parvovirus (P) comes as a powder. The vaccine is commonly known as DHP. In order to inject this vaccine into the dog, it is necessary to reconstitute the powder into a liquid form.

There are a couple of options for reconstituting the powder. The first is to use the liquid vaccine for Lepto (L). However, many people are choosing not to give their dogs Lepto, due to the severe adverse reaction of death that can occur from the vaccine.

An alternative to use, is the Diluent that each pharmaceutical company makes specifically to reconstitute the DHP powder. Here is the example by MSD Intervet, for use with their Nobivac and Canigen DHP vaccine.

It must be remembered that one brand of vaccine is not safer than another. It is not the brand that you dog might have a reaction to, but the product itself. Like all dog foods (including raw), you dog's chemical makeup might make it react to a brand that numerous other people have recommended. That is why it is the owner's decision to vaccinate or not.

Remember that by UK law, the owner of the dog decides if they wish their dog to be vaccinated or not, based on local information by the vet, so "that the owner can make an informed decision."

In 2024 I submitted FOI to every Vet training establishment in the UK, asking a number of questions around vaccinations. The replies show that there is a serious lack of information being provided to students of the veterinary industry on vaccinations, and vaccination regimes. The old myth of "If in doubt then vaccinate again" is old teaching, and has no place in the modern world of animal care.

From the number of online surveys being conducted by veterinary students, and the contents/questions of those surveys, it is clear that students are being brainwashed with getting all dogs vaccinated with Lepto. It has become clear that more recently qualified vets are misleading clients by claiming that the owner is putting the dog at risk, and even of killing the dog by the owner not vaccinating against Lepto. This is of course untrue. The need to vaccinate relates to the lifestyle of the dog, and where it is walked or exercised. Remember that Lepto is carried by a number of mammals, and more likely to be found on a wet field than in a flowing river.

So the aim of this page is to make a list of all vet practices in the UK, who will vaccinate without trying to force the owner to also have Lepto vaccine.

If you wish to be included on the map of "No Lepto vets", please email myself at dorsetdog.info@gmail.com confirming that all receptionists, and veterinary care staff from ACA to vets are aware that DHP can be reconstituted with other solvents, and Lepto is not compulsory when receiving DHP.
